Abstract

Sustainability is a critical issue for local governments globally, and India is no exception. To address challenges such as climate change, air pollution, and energy security, Indian local governments need to implement sustainable policies and programs. Urban services, such as transportation, water supply, sewage management, pollution control, and solid waste management, are crucial for citizens' well-being and quality of life. Urban local bodies in Kerala have shifted towards sustainable practices in recent years. This study assesses the sustainability of urban local bodies in Kerala by analyzing their water supply systems, solid waste management practices, and land use patterns. Additionally, the study examines the impact of water pollution, air pollution, and noise pollution on the urban environment and identifies opportunities for sustainable future building practices. The findings of this study will improve our understanding of the current state of urban sustainability and provide recommendations for enhancing the long-term viability of urban areas.
